COVID is likely to spike as cold and flu season causes weakened immune systems, and the change in temperature drives people indoors once again. The best time to squash a pandemic is when the environmental characteristics slow transmission, and public health experts warn that unless we use the dwindling weeks between now and the onset of “indoor weather” to tamp down transmission in the country, this winter could be bleak.   CNN covers a report that more than 97,000 children in the U.S. tested positive for COVID in the last two weeks of July. The states the study looked at showed a 40% increase in child COVID cases during that time period. While more classrooms are scheduled to reopen this week, other students are already headed back home for virtual learning, due to new infections among students and teachers. The Washington Post ($) visualizes data about whether the U.S. could build herd immunity without letting millions of people die.   New COVID Literature & Studies A study of isolated symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID patients further supports the finding that viral loads are similar in both groups of patients. The researchers suggest that isolating asymptomatic patients may be necessary to control the spread of the novel coronavirus. Read the study. A study of COVID cases among families with children finds no evidence of transmission from children to adults. Other recent studies have reported child-to-adult transmission. While it is difficult to draw definitive conclusions yet, children appear to transmit COVID with significantly less frequency than adults do.
