CNBC covers a statement from the CDC suggesting the U.S. could get coronavirus under control in one to two months if everyone wore a mask. On Saturday, President Trump wore a mask in public for the first time while visiting Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

The Hill reports that Virginia has become the first state to issue work safety standards for coronavirus. The standards include mandating personal protective equipment, sanitation, social distancing, infectious disease preparedness, record keeping, and training. The rules will be in place for six months. They come in the absence of a federal standard. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has declined to impose a nationwide COVID work safety standard.
- The Guardian reports that Russian state-sponsored hackers are targeting COVID vaccine researchers. The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said drug companies and research groups were being targeted by a group known as APT29, which was “almost certainly” part of the Kremlin’s intelligence services. It is rare for the UK to explicitly state that it believes another country is behind a coordinated and ongoing campaign of cyber-attacks, but British officials said it shared its assessment with the U.S. and Canada.

A study examines antibodies against the novel coronavirus in recovered COVID patients and finds that there is a broad variety of antibodies produced, with significant variation in their ability to actually neutralize the virus. The researchers hope that these results can enable better design of vaccines to elicit the most effective antibodies. Read the study.

A research team has engineered “nanobodies” (fragments of antibodies) that can block the novel coronavirus from attaching to ACE2, the protein on human cells that the virus uses to enter these cells. Nanobodies are a relatively new type of medical therapy; the researchers suggest that they may be added to a combination of other antibodies to increase the overall effectiveness of the mixture in treating COVID. - A study examines the immune responses of COVID patients and finds three primary “immunotypes” that lead to particularly poor clinical outcomes. This result may explain the diverse clinical course of these patients and help create more individualized approaches to therapy. Read the study.
