The Day’s Top COVID Stories
STAT reports that WHO and partners have unveiled an ambitious plan to deliver 2 billion doses of COVID vaccine to high-risk populations. The plan anticipates that by the end of 2021, the doses could be delivered to countries to vaccinate high risk individuals, likely including health care workers, people over the age of 65, and other adults who suffer from conditions like diabetes.
USA TODAY reports that as COVID cases and unemployment continue to rise, the White House urges the Supreme Court to end the Affordable Care Act. Without the Affordable Care Act, 20 million people could lose their healthcare. 27 million people may have already lost job-based coverage due to layoffs. A report from the government showed that about 487,000 people signed up with HealthCare.gov after losing their workplace insurance this year. That's an increase of 46% from the same time period last year.
- The Guardian reports that U.S. government experts believe more than 20 million Americans could have contracted Coronavirus – 10 times more than official counts, as cases are now rising in more than half of states and a new warning came of the risk of “apocalyptic” infection in major cities. The estimate was based on the number of known cases (currently nearing 2.4 million) in the U.S, multiplied by the average rate of antibodies seen from the serology tests (about an average of 10 to one).
New COVID Literature & Studies
A study finds that in older COVID patients, the Coronavirus can be detected for longer durations, even after controlling for disease severity and medications received. Read the study.
A study finds that isolation wards often contain high levels of the Coronavirus, even after patients have clinically improved. This result indicates that there are potentially significant risks for healthcare workers in these wards. Read the study.
- A randomized controlled trial finds that colchicine (an anti-inflammatory medication commonly used to treat gout), reduces the likelihood of development of severe symptoms, when given to COVID patients. Read the study.
